Safeguard Your Identity
Check your credit report every 4 months.
You can get your free credit report from Equifax, Experian, & TransUnion by calling 1-877-322-8228 or online at annualcreditreport.com. It is always a good idea to monitor 3 simple things from your credit report:
- Name & Address, Former Addresses
- Verify accounts are yours
- Verify balances are accurate
Financial Reports
Monitor accounts online using a computer you trust, and report any suspicious activity
Do a Wallet Check
Photocopy everything in your wallet & place in a secure place. Do not carry your Social Security Number in your wallet.
At Home
Place personal documents in a secure place out of plain view of service people, sales persons, and visitors.
Your Mailbox
Place outgoing mail in an official mailbox. Arrange for mail pickup if you are away more than one day. Opt-out of pre-approved offers.
On The Phone
- Sign up for the Wisconsin NO CALL list to limit incoming sales calls at 1-866-966-2255 or nocall.wisconsin.gov.
- Do not give out personal information – legitimate companies will not ask for it.
- Be aware of Caller ID (Spoofing) scams.
When You Travel
Be aware of your surroundings when providing information – someone may overhear. Use a credit card or traveler’s checks whenever possible.
Shred Your Documents
Especially your monthly bills if you typically throw them away after paying them. Consider paying your bills online using your bank's online service.
Electronic and Online Purchases
Verify a Web site is secure before sharing information. Limit your time online, and close your browser when done with transactions. Use a pre-paid card or credit card, not a debit card.
